Writing a blog post can seem like an insurmountable task. There is nothing more frustrating than having a 10,000 word article in your head that you have not had the time to put on paper. Writing can be a massive challenge for many people. So today, I want to highlight the 5 phases of writing to help you break down your writing tasks into smaller, manageable chunks.

Title stage

The title is the first stage in 5 stages of writing that your viewers will see. If it does not draw them in, they will click away to a competitor’s site. It is easy to write lots of titles and then forget about them while you finish the article. It’s quite tempting to put the titles on the back burner. However, this is a dangerous path. As soon as you write a few titles, you can start to see patterns. Be creative with your titles. Use current events, and current affairs, or ask questions about the article (probably best not to do this with a safety post).

Come up with a number of potential titles, then edit them until you have one that is the most attention-grabbing. Once you have a good title in mind, you can write your article.

(You can automate this stage by using Yoast SEO. You should set the title to be 70-100 characters. (They suggest 60-70 characters, 50-60 characters, and 40-50 characters, respectively.)

Introduction stage

Often times, the first stage is the hardest to write. When the ‘title stage’ of an article is complete, you should then write an introduction. This part of the article should quickly outline what the article is about. It should summarise the key points that you will be covering. Use an interesting title and grab the reader’s attention.

Copy stage

This is where the magic happens. This is the stage that drives viewers through the article. This is where you can entice, persuade, and answer all of your questions. Remember to answer all of your audience’s questions.

Write the body of your article, covering the content that you outlined at the beginning. Make the copy conversational; use simple language. Use your own voice. Don’t sound like a stuffy salesperson; try and make your copy informative, helpful, and enjoyable to read.

It is important to not ramble. If what you are writing no longer relates to the content that you have written about in the past, then you need to cut it off.

Add pictures

Pictures are crucial for grabbing a reader’s attention. Use plenty of them. Remember, a picture is worth 1000 words. Pictures can help to explain your point, and clarify and consolidate what you are saying. They add a bit of fun.

Keep scrolling

Readers tend to scan articles, skimming to find what they are looking for. If your article is too long, they may give up. Keep the scrolling to a minimum. The more your readers have to scroll, the more likely it is that they will stop scrolling and come back to it at a later date.

Finally, make sure your posts are compelling enough for people to want to share them on social media.

Conclusion stage

It should recap what you have written in the article. It should set the scene again for the audience, answering their questions and providing some more useful information. The conclusion should also contain a call to action, telling them to go and read more.

3. Revising: This is the stage of the writing process when the writer goes back and makes changes to his or her draft. This might include adding, deleting, or rearranging information. The goal of revision is to make the writing as clear and concise as possible.

4. Editing: This is the stage of the writing process when the writer proofreads his or her work for any grammar or spelling errors. This is also a good time to make sure that all of the sentences are properly constructed and that there is a logical flow to the piece.

5. Publishing: This is the stage of the writing process when the writer shares his or her work with others. This stage can be difficult for some writers because they may feel that their work is not good enough to share.

Firstly, how do you get your ideas?

I have a confession to make. The inspiration for writing comes in fits and starts. It is never consistent, and it needs to be like that. As a novelist, you need to allow yourself the time you need to write your story. I find that if I am struggling, then I find a new story to write. As your story evolves and you are able to write, you will notice that once you have written a thousand words, you will not want to stop. This happens to me a lot, actually. I draw a blank about where my story goes and then I get stuck, but then I come back to it and realize that the characters are no longer as compelling as they were before.

Create a structure

Your story should have structure. It helps your readers follow your story and understand how it unfolds. Creating a structure is essential to creating your story. The way you write may be non-linear, but you need to structure it like a non-fiction book. A structure that starts with Chapter 1 and ends with Chapter 20, with each chapter having its own subheading, for example, “Chapter 1 – Setting the scene.” This structure allows the reader to move quickly through the book and really enjoy it.

Map out the plot

The structure that you created in step 1 should then be followed through plot points, headings, subheadings, outlines, etc. In fact, your plot should be almost doodled onto a piece of paper. Outline the story clearly, but do not outline it too clearly. Think about the things that happen and when they are going to happen. You might want to limit yourself to a certain time period. This will give your story a focus.

Your story should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. If your story is too long, then it might not flow well. In fact, people may get bored and switch it off. Once the story is mapped out, you can now begin to write. Write a chapter. If you are a writer, then it can be a challenge to write the first sentence of chapter 1, but with time it will get easier.

If you follow this structure, and it does take some time, your story will not be any worse than the thousands of novels that are published every year. The important thing is to follow it through and finish it. If you know that you do not have a life, then why do you even care about your story?

The Writing Process

By following the above steps, you can write a basic story that will only have a basic structure. However, if you write regularly, then you can rewrite your story, and you will find that each time you read it, there are parts that work better than others. Over time, you will rewrite your story until you reach a version that you will enjoy reading and that other people will enjoy reading.

If you look at all the top writers, you will see that the stories that they created were rewritten and improved many times. There is no shame in rewriting your story. In fact, you should strive to do just that. Keep working on your story and you will improve.

If you finish and feel that the story does not work, DO NOT feel like a failure. It is important to identify why the story did not work. For example, was it because you thought your ending was lame? Was it because you needed to put in more chapters? Did you need to put in more pages? Just write a “second draft” of your story. Another point to make here is this: If you try to write something well the first time, the odds are that you will not finish.

Fix the grammar and spelling. Reading it aloud is a good way to do this. You can usually catch any errors you may have missed. Proofread your story. Finally, read your story aloud. Even just to yourself. To yourself is the best way to read your finished product. If you find that you
